Let’s take a couple of scenarios:

Scenario 1 – I want to lose weight but I don’t want to visit a nutritionist because she is going to ask me to avoid eating out which means I won’t be able to enjoy my favorite foods!

Scenario 2 – My nutritionist tells me that when you eat out, prefer to eat clear soups, veg sandwiches, steamed idlis instead of the dosa or medu vada that I love. It’s really sad to look at other people enjoying their food, when you are not. Seriously, looking at the limited options I have, I’d rather eat khichdi at home.

We have landed in an era where food is measured in numbers. We plan our breakfast plate as 100 Kcal + 200 Kcal + 250 Kcal and not as a glass of milk, an egg and 2 pieces of toast with butter. The numbers will always add up to be the same, but there are unlimited ways to fill those numbers. So, instead of the above breakfast, you could have a glass of juice, a doughnut and a muffin OR a large bowl of yoghurt and mix cut fruits with honey. All these add up to a 500 calorie breakfast.

Let’s say you have been advised a 2000 calorie diet per day. And all you need to do in order to stay fit is eat within that limit.

You join a conversation, and a very commonly heard or discussed thing is: “I don’t really care if I ate six slices of pizza or had a big bowl of ice-cream or a vadapav, I’ll just go walk for 5-6 kms or hit the gym for 2 hours instead”??

Or “I did two hours of Zumba and Pilates in the morning, I certainly deserve a huge treat today!”

The fact is that physical activity cannot really compensate for overeating. Even if you exercise “round the clock” you can’t transform your body if you constantly give in to cravings and treat yourself to processed foods, refined carbs and sweet delights.
