Pair foods smartly to avoid putting on weight

Some of my favorite dishes include Pizza, French fries, Brownie, Samosa, Pani Puri, Doughnuts, and Milkshakes. Yes, all of the junk and loaded with calories! But, I make sure I give in to my taste-buds. Always. And without any guilt attached.

After all, even if I am a nutritionist, there is a big foodie within me. And that foodie loves savoring these meals.

In fact, when relatives see me relishing pizza and dessert at a wedding or my colleagues see me enjoy a sev puri, they can’t stop telling me how lucky I am. I can eat everything I love whereas they must watch every bite they eat. What’s the difference between me and them?

Simple!! I know the trick of how to eat smart so that I don’t gain weight. Let me share my secret with you. I’ll teach you how I eat what I love, aka the sinful foods, without piling on the pounds.

Let’s start with pizzas. I can already see you are in love with this blog. Pizza has refined flour and dollops of cheese which makes it super high on calories and a complete no-no for weight watchers. So, pizza scores high on carbs, protein, and fats but is stripped of fiber.

While adding veggie toppings is a good option for upping the fiber content, I am in favor of adding a soup as well. A vegetable broth or a simple homemade tomato soup would make the meal wholesome. And yes, don’t forget to share the pizza.

And if it’s only pizzas for a meal, I restrict myself to 2-3 slices of a medium pizza. Since pizzas have a high GI, it is important to keep the portion size in check. Overindulging in too much pizza at a time would throw you completely off the track of the weight loss journey you are on.

French Fries:

This must be another favourite meal, that you shy away from, on a weight loss plan. The potatoes and oil make this snack a calorie-dense one. While fries take care of your carbs and fats, they lack protein and fibre. A sprouts and veggie salad, a glass of buttermilk or grilled chicken is the perfect way to make fries a healthy meal.  Remember to avoid any other carbs rich foods (like rice, bread etc) when you have fries

Just like pizzas, fries are made of potatoes which is a high GI food. Hence, portion control is super important. Whenever, I am in the mood for eating fries, I opt for a medium size potato, fry it and eat it guilt-free.

Pani Puri:

It’s one meal I can eat at any time of the day. But, the fried puchkas/ puris along with potatoes make this delicious chaat a no-no for weight loss. And, it lacks protein which makes it an incomplete meal.                                                         Bon happetee indian food logging app

My trick – I enjoy the pani puri with ragda, moong or chana to up the protein and health quotient. I savor it as an evening snack and keep the portion size to one plate, no matter how tempting it may be.

Brownies, chocolates, shakes:

I am a chocoholic. Anything with chocolate, whether it’s pastry, brownie or ice cream is my absolute favorite. But, the thing with chocolates is they contain sugar and fat, ingredients which make you fat.

So, whenever I am in the mood for something chocolatey, I earn it through a power-packed exercise session. Post a brisk walk or a swim, I give in to my chocolate temptation.

Your body needs energy, i.e. carbs post a grueling exercise. And chocolate brownie which is packed with the goodness of the energy-giving glucose fuels my body and satisfies my taste buds. I follow this trick with one of my favorites – milkshakes as well.

There’s nothing more delicious than a piping hot samosa. But, this scrumptious snack comes with a heavy calorie tag. It is loaded with carbs and fat but again the protein is missing.

So, how to savor this lip-smacking snack? I skip the pav and instead pair it with a besan or moong dal chilla. Pav again is a carbohydrate and eating too many carbs is a sure shot way of making me fat. A veggie and egg white omelet can complement the samosas as well.

And of course, I restrict myself to “one” samosa to keep the calories in check.

So, you realised how I enjoy all my favourite foods guilt-free without piling on the weight. My funda is simple when it comes to eating : 1) pair it right 2) control portion

So, go ahead; now you can enjoy your favourite foods too without worrying about the calories.
