We know Diwali is around the corner when diwali sweets & snacks start flooding in & we start dedicating our weekends to cleaning up our houses until spick and span! And, not your regular sweeping, dusting and mopping kind of cleaning, but it’s the time of the year where every corner gets special attention, unwanted materials are disposed and walls get a fresh coat of paint.
In fact, some ancient texts mention the importance of this cleaning ritual. Since Diwali is celebrated somewhere between mid-October to mid-November, right after the monsoons end, the cleaning makes sure all the germs and infestation that monsoons brought with them get eradicated with the whitewashing and other pre- Diwali cleaning activities.
Giving your home, a good tough cleaning, decluttering, and decorations signify the purity of mind and soul. Basically, we detoxify our houses to have a fresh start!
However, after having cleaned up our concrete houses, it’s time to detox our biological house too – our BODY!
We all strive to have a healthy body but over time, our body gets run down from not-so-healthy foods, caffeine, alcohol, stress, toxins in our everyday environment, and unhealthy habits that sneak into our daily lives.
The liver is the detoxifier of the body. But the environmental toxin often overwhelmes it. It is then not able to function to its full capacity and produce the antioxidants it is responsible for and hence we need a liver cleanse.
A detox plan gives your body the time, space, and right conditions to deal with those factors that run our systems down. For those wondering how to detox the body, It’s nothing but a natural cleanse which restores balance and vitality to our body once more!
During Diwali, having indulged in sweets and fried foods, opting for a detox once the festive season ends is a good way to come back to your pre-festive body composition and mood.
How to do it?
While it does help, you don’t necessarily need low calorie Diwali sweets this festive season. Neither does going on a detox diet mean a fancy cold-pressed juice subscription kit or exotic flavored teas.
Here is how you can detox yourself after Diwali your own way for it to suit your lifestyle
Real, live food!
Specific foods help with deactivating toxins and removing them from the body. Thus, aim to incorporate as many fresh fruits and vegetables, curd, nuts and oilseeds and tons of fluid in your diet.
Curd, raw fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of prebiotics. Prebiotic foods help the good bacteria in the gut to thrive while probiotics also help increase their numbers.
Completely exclude all the processed foods from your kitchen!
Vegetable Juices, smoothies, sautéed veggies, mixed nuts, and salads are perfect to start with.
Coriander and citrus fruits such as grapes, oranges have been shown to assist with the removal of heavy metal build up within the body.
Hydrating body to eliminate toxic particles is an important part of cleaning up your body. It rejuvenates every cell inside your body.
So, drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water (or detox water). Use meal times as a reminder to hydrate.
Infuse your water with traditional detoxifiers like lemon slices and tulsi (holy basil) leaves and don’t forget to carry a water bottle through the day.
Aerobic exercise is a great detoxifier. Any form of aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling will strengthen your lung capacity/ability. It boosts your metabolism by improving oxygen-carrying capacity of lung cells.
Break exercise into smaller time periods. Take 10 minutes in the morning to stretch, go for a half hour walk before heading to work, or take the stairs instead of the elevator in your building.
Catch up with friends over a walk, run or gym session instead of over coffee or cocktails.
A good night’s sleep regenerates the body and helps with the healing and repairing of your heart, muscles and blood vessels.
Be aware of the importance of sleep hygiene. Avoid caffeine before bed, allow 2 hours between your last meal and bedtime, use dim lighting.
Let the digital detox happen before you sleep. Switch off your phone, find a place for your TV other than your bedroom, free yourself from distractions and make your sleep space as comfortable as possible.
Breathe fresh air into your lungs; receive your daily dose of vitamin D with suns warmth on your skin and boost your mood.
Exercise outdoors instead of in a gym every once in a while.
If you’re going to be inside all day, take your breakfast outside to a sunny place. Instead of eating lunch at your desk, go for a walk outside and sit in a comfortable, relaxing space.
Here are some reasons your body would benefit from a holistic, natural detox
- 1. Bounce-out-of-bed levels of energy!
Many people report feeling improved and more sustained energy during and after a detoxed body. You must aim adequate hydration to experience this benefit.
- Weight loss and breaking through the plateau
Detox is an amazing way to kick-start your weight loss journey or push through when you feel you are stuck at the same weight despite your efforts. It is not a starvation diet but it helps you to nourish your gut and enrich your body with the right nutrients
- Resetting your food choices
The major goal of detoxifying your body is to have a sustainable change. By purification process, you will not only be supporting your body’s detoxification pathways but you will be resetting the way you eat, and the choices you make.
Cutting out toxic foods and controlling cravings can significantly help in changing your habits in the long term.
- Controlling cravings
You can’t control cravings with just will-power alone. They are based in hormonal imbalances and need to be addressed and controlled. Cravings significantly impact binge eating and weight gain. A smart detox way can help you curb the cravings and it will provide consistency in achieving your health goals.
Other benefits are:
- Prevention of chronic diseases
- Stronger immunity
- Assistance in losing a few kilos
- Improve quality of life
- Radiant, glowing skin
Detoxing for 2-3 days once or twice a month is ideal and helps you restore a balance in your body. So, this Diwali, don’t just clean and declutter your home, but take a step ahead and detox your body as well. Take care of your body; it’s the only place you have to live in!
