11 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Have you ever wondered how your colleague stays so thin despite eating the amount of food he eats? You see him eating samosas for breakfast, half a dozen chapatis plus rice for lunch, jalebis for snack, and another three-course meal for dinner. And if ever you do the same, the result will be a bulgier you! Do you know what is helping your friend and showing a villainous approach towards you? Well, its METABOLISM!

Scientifically, it is the chemical process that occurs within a living organism in order to maintain life, and metabolic rate is the rate at which those basic processes and functions of the body occur. Now everyone has a different metabolic rate, the reason why you might put on kilos even after three cheat days, while that friend of yours who keeps hogging on chocolates, ice creams, fried chicken, and almost everything that he can lay his hands on, will continue to remain lean as ever.

In this world, there is no such thing as a free lunch. It comes with its own caveats. For weight watchers, health freaks and dieters also, a free lunch can also mean a host of hidden costs.

How to eat rice without gaining weight

“I have stopped eating rice” say all weight watchers and diabetics!

Obviously, we know it is the right thing to do since rice is a primary cause of weight gain and fluctuations in blood sugar levels! Have you ever wondered why?

It is because the Glycemic Index (GI) of rice is very high! Goodness…that is such a complicated scientific term to use, isn’t it? Speaking in plain terms, GI is nothing but a measure of how fast and how much a food raises your blood glucose levels!

The body breaks down carbohydrates from the foods we eat and converts them to glucose. After eating, the time it takes for the body to convert carbohydrates and release glucose into the bloodstream varies, depending on the type of carbohydrate. Some foods cause the blood glucose level to rise rapidly; others have a gradual effect. Foods with higher GI values raise blood sugar more rapidly than foods with lower GI values. An increase in the blood sugar levels can lead to fat storage, diabetes etc.

Don’t be disappointed! It doesn’t mean you need to stop eating your favourite rice or carbs.

Scenario 1 – I want to lose weight but I don’t want to visit a nutritionist because she is going to ask me to avoid eating out which means I won’t be able to enjoy my favorite foods!

Scenario 2 – My nutritionist tells me that when you eat out, prefer to eat clear soups, veg sandwiches, steamed idlis instead of the dosa or medu vada that I love. It’s really sad to look at other people enjoying their food, when you are not. Seriously, looking at the limited options I have, I’d rather eat khichdi at home.

We come across such scenarios quite often, don’t we?

So, here is a little experiment we did.  Continue reading
